The front halls of middle-class Exeter homes announced each family’s dedication to the virtue of cleanliness. Wash basins and jugs occupied this space, along with long towels that were rolled and suspended from a rack. This is a particularly sumptuous example. Linens of all kinds—tablecloths, napkins, towels, bed sheets—were among a household’s most valuable items and were always bequeathed to the next of kin.
