Ancient Japanese swords and swords imported from Asian mainland in ancient times are classified on the basis of the interpretation of their pommels. This example, showing the stylized heads of two (sō) dragons (ryū) fighting (arasou) over a gem (tama), is thus referred to as sōryū tama o arasou type.
