Three vases of this design, known as a vase de Chevilly, were exhibited in the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. The innovative form and decoration of the vases reflected the desire at the Sèvres factory to be at the forefront of contemporary taste. Sandier's design for the vase de Chevilly rejected historical styles and embraced new technological capabilities, which included the crystallized glaze seen on this example.
