Stamped terracotta mortarium fragment

late 3rd–4th century CE
Not on view
The rim bears an oblong stamp containing the word HERMOGENOUS (of Hermogenes) in Greek, indicating the name of the maker or, more likely, the factory owner. Other mortaria with the same stamp have been found at numerous sites around the coasts of the eastern Mediterranean, indicating how these vessels were distributed by means of maritime trade.
