Fragmentary marble votive altar

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

This small altar was set up to the Everlasting [Gods] for the well-being of two men, Flavius Arsinoe and Flavius Appon, probably of Egyptian origin. The inscription testifies to the continued worship of pagan gods in late Roman times.
