Bronze hydria (water jar)

3rd quarter of the 6th century BCE
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 152
On vertical handle, lions above and a female bust below. On the side handles, ducks' heads.
Bronze hydriai produce a more sober and archaic impression than their terracotta counterparts due to the exigencies of the material. Without extensive figural decoration, the shape and its articulation are paramount. A variety of organic elements are introduced in the handles—the bust of a woman, lions, and a palmette on the vertical handle; ducks' heads and palmettes on the horizontal handles.
