Bronze statuette of a diskos thrower

Etruscan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 170

The pose of this athlete is similar to that of the larger diskos thrower on the lid of the Campanian cinerary urn (40.11.3) displayed in this case. This example, with an oval plinth still preserved, may have been a finial for a candelabrum or a lid attachment for a small container, perhaps a cista (toiletries box).
