Glass mosaic inlay fragment

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Translucent purple, opaque white and yellow, and colorless.
Flat plaque.
Marbled mosaic pattern in yellow ground with white, colorless, and fine purple streaks.
Chipped edges; polished upper side; pitting of surface bubbles on upper side; dulling, pitting, and creamy weathering on underside and jagged edges; one straight edge ground flat.

The marbled pattern deliberately imitates semi-precious stones such as onyx or alabaster.
