Terracotta four-handled amphora (jar)

Etruscan, Italo-Corinthian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 170

Three felines and a winged hybrid

Vases of the same elongated shape and with similar painted decoration have been found in the Monte Michele cemetery at Veii, just north of Rome. The type represents a local response to the animals painted on Protocorinthian pottery imported from Greece. Although the felines are standard types, the odd griffin-like hybrid is a unique invention.
