James Welling American
1991
Not on view
Moving freely between abstraction and representation, Welling insists in all his work on the essential material fact of his medium: the trace of light on the surface
of a sheet of paper. For his series Dégradés, the artist abandoned the camera altogether, using the enlarger as a source of illumination through which he made a number of exposures using blue and gray filters.
