Cecily Hamilton

Oscar Gustav Rejlander British, born Sweden
1863–1867
Not on view
In 1863 Rejlander visited Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. He photographed the family of his friend Alfred, Lord Tennyson as well as the Camerons, and Julia Margaret made prints from copy negatives of Rejlander photographs even before receiving her own camera. Undoubtedly, she knew Rejlander’s “high art” allegorical concoctions as well as his more straightforward but sentimental portraits such as this one.
