Exbrook Arms
With this photograph, taken shortly after his graduation from art school, Welling began an investigation of artificial illumination that continues to preoccupy him twenty-five years later. Glowing with a spooky, dreamlike light, the entryway to this "Old English" club in Southern California exemplifies a typically American melding of old and new, authentic and ersatz, at the same time as it is an exquisite meditation on the expressive properties of light.
