The sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet's (1824-1910) acute observation of anatomical structure-sometimes carried out at the morgue-and his dexterous modeling of minute physiological details brought him fame at a time when naturalism was ascendant. The original negative (now lost), may have been the product of collaboration between Tournachon and his brother, Nadar.
