Night Shot 1

John Schabel American

Not on view

Night Shot 1 belongs to a series of pictures of amateur photographers shooting around Times Square at night. Using the flash of his subject's camera as his only source of illumination, Schabel transforms both photographers and passersby into ghostly shades and silhouettes. Dominated by a blinding burst of light, the picture poses an implicit question: Does photography ultimately reveal or obscure the world around us?
