[View Along the Atlantic & Great Western Railway Showing Tracks and Locomotive]
Views of the American landscape east of the Mississippi River made before the Civil War era are exceedingly rare. This study, made in Ohio or Pennsylvania, shows the tracks of the Atlantic & Great Western Railway, which ran from Salamanca, New York, to Akron, Ohio, and from Meadville to Oil City, Pennsylvania. With simple effect, the photograph dutifully records how abruptly the railroad changed the pastoral landscape.
