Frederick Douglas Langenheim was William's son. F.D. was the eldest of three children born before the death of his mother, Sophia Langenheim, within a few years of her marriage to William in 1846. Ellen N. Lawson's documents, currently housed in the Oberlin College Archives, indicate F.D.'s dates as 1849-1939.
