[Miss Macrae of Inverinate, Wife of Horatio Ross]

Horatio Ross British, born Scotland

Not on view

Far better known in his day as an athlete and a sportsman than as a photographer, Ross excelled in deerstalking and was judged the finest shot in Scotland. Keen on the challenge of pitting his knowledge, stamina, and experience against the deer's superior senses of smell, sight, and hearing, Ross brought to his sport an intimate knowledge of the terrain, a practiced ability to judge distance, and an exceptional attentiveness in observation–just the qualities needed when he took to the Highland countryside with a camera in place of his rifle.
