This album, published by the Milan-based studio photographer Ganzini, records the locations memorialized in the Italian Romantic writer Alessandro Manzoni’s The Betrothed (1827). The historical novel, considered a classic of Italian literature, recounts the tale of Renzo and Lucia, star-crossed lovers from Lombardy’s peasantry who attempt to wed despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Produced during the infancy of Italian nationhood, the album attests to photography’s role in promoting patriotic sentiment.
