Amulet of a Bes-image

Third Intermediate Period
ca. 1070–664 B.C.
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130
Characteristics drawn from achrondroplasia are melded with those from lions to create a fierce-looking group of deities. These gods protected people during their life as well as after their death. This example has particularly clear harsh characteristics that emphasize the otherworldliness of the Bes-image, who has an important role in protecting ancient Egyptians.
