Model hes jar

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This elegantly shaped object is a so-called hes jar with a stopper at the top. Such vessels were used for liquid offerings or in purification rituals. The piece here is not an actual jar though, but a miniature vessel that is solid and served as a model. It might have been used as a grave good to magically substitute a real jar.
