Left Side of a Nude Female with a Tripartite Wig

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

The proper left side of this nude female figure is the magnificent work of a master sculptor, even in its fragmentary condition. The partially preserved eye socket was originally inlaid with small pieces of stone replicating the sclera and iris/pupil, and the statue is embellished with a painted a bracelet, anklet, and part of a broad collar. The position of the leg in relation to the torso indicates that the figure was striding, an uncommon stance for a female figure. Black marks across the foot represent a sandal, also an infrequent addition to Middle Kingdom statues.
