The Punishment of the Arrogant Niobe by Diana and Apollo
Pierre Charles Jombert French
Not on view
Although he never achieved great success, Jombert had the distinction of triumphing over Jacques Louis David in the Prix de Rome competition of 1772, foiling David’s second attempt. This oil sketch was Jombert’s study for his prize-winning painting, today in the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. In its bravura handling, luscious impasto, and pastel tones, it exemplifies the qualities that made the oil sketch so popular in the final decades of the Rococo period.
