The Temptation of Christ

After David Vinckboons Netherlandish
Claes Jansz. Visscher Dutch

Not on view

Although David Vinckboons made only three prints himself, his designs were the basis for more prints than any other Netherlandish artist in the early seventeen century. The present work is one of a handful of small etchings with Biblical subjects that Visscher made in the early years of the seventeenth century. The subject is recounted in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. After he was baptized by St. John, Christ went into the desert to pray and fast and at the end of 40 days Satan tried to get him to abandon God and his mission. However, Jesus resisted all temptation and returned to Galilee to take up his ministry.
