With this drawing, Charles Percier won the second prize in the competition for the Grand Prix in 1783. The program called for a menagerie in the form of a square in the park of the château of a sovereign. Among the requirements were an amphitheater and open arenas for animal combat. A general plan, representing the disposition of all the buildings and courtyards, fountains and watering places, animal lodgings and cages, was required of the entrants.
