Tamayo’s three musicians adorn the cover of a collection of Mexican songs arranged for piano and guitar; similar vignettes by the artist accompany the sheet music and lyrics inside. The collection was published under the imprint Mexican Folkways. Founded in 1925, its titular magazine introduced Mexican popular arts to foreign audiences. The publication’s editor, Frances Toor, was an American who—like many others attracted by the postrevolutionary cultural effervescence—moved to Mexico City in the early 1920s.
