These soldiers wear Victorian era British military uniforms used in tropical climates, and the drawing likely represents an incident in a conflict such as the 1st Boer War (1880-81) or Sikkim Expedition (1888). Shiels worked in Edinburgh and traveled to Australia but little is known about his career.
