Wallis's engraving is based on a large watercolour by Turner from 1818, which is now in the British Museum, London. Published by Ernest Gambart (1814–1902) in tandem with another single-sheet print "Dover" (by Willmore), and also in the Met's collection (X.772; X.773), they were the last prints published in Turner's lifetime; he died just a month after their joint publication. One critic writing in the monthly periodical ''The Art Journal'' commended the pair of coastal views which were found to have been "very skilfully engraved, and are likely to find a numerous class of admirers." Wallis was a prolific engraver after Turner and was employed on nearly all the artist's important print projects from the 1820s onwards.
