Not on view

Portraits of George III, Queen Charlotte and their children adorn this delicately colored fan leaf that celebrates royal patronage of the arts. The group stands in a picture gallery near Windsor Castle (the latter is seen through the open door at right). Lit from above by a skylight, the room is closely hung with works by Canaletto and Benjamin West that are part of the royal collection. The printing was executed à la poupée, a method in which colors are carefully dabbed onto the plate with small rags. Mounted as a fan, it would have signaled the user's royalist loyalties.
