The Satyr family
Among the most charming of Montagna's engravings are a series of fourteen small mythological subjects, many of which were inspired by the woodcut illustrations in the 1497 edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses. This amusing scene, in which the human mother struggles to civilize her half-wild offspring-she has apparently succeeded in domesticating the panther-was probably created in response to similar works by Dürer and Jacopo de' Barbari.
