Returning to Alexandria in November 1838 after a month-long trip up the Nile, Roberts was granted a brief audience with Mehemet Ali, the Viceroy of Egypt. The artist was not allowed to sketch during the meeting, so based this image of the pasha talking with British diplomats from memory. Louis Haghe's lithograph was published in England in 1849.
