Night Forest (Feuilles éparsés) demonstrates Hayter’s move toward allover compositions and abstraction. The print’s deep tones of violet-black, blue, and green and its dense layering of marks evoke a forest at night. Although Hayter was no longer formally associated with the Surrealist movement, an interest in the unconscious continued to influence his work. This print was published with the Surrealist writer René Crevel’s posthumously released text Feuilles éparsés (Scattered Leaves). Traces of resin marked the plate with uneven drips and splatters, and Hayter used hard and soft rollers to cover the plate with different colors of ink, a technique fundamental to the viscosity method he developed with the artist Krishna Reddy.
