Ladies in a Pavilion: Page from a Dispersed Ragamala Series (Garland of Musical Modes)

India (Rajasthan, Marwar)

Not on view

In this unidentified Ragamala page, two women sit in conversation while a third looks on. Marwari taste for saturated red and orange earth tones and a formal presentation are perfectly typified. The flowers above the kneeling woman’s head indicate an awareness of Mughal forms. One also finds clear relationships with earlier Rajput styles exemplified in the Bhagavata Purana of 1520–40 (1985.34). (This painting is part of the same Ragamala series as 55.121.27 and 55.121.29.)
