The Cousins

Anders Zorn Swedish
1883
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690
Executed following Zorn’s first travels abroad, this etching portrays two daughters of his host in Cádiz. The prominent fan functions in multiple ways in the composition: it serves as a barrier that partly shields the sitters from the artist’s gaze, as a device for flirtation, and as an attribute that underscores the sitters’ Spanish identities. The watercolor on which this work is based earned Zorn his first international acclaim when it was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882. Later, he painted at least one fan design of his own that features two sisters, today in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
