Acala is an esoteric deity whose role is to remove obstacles to enlightenment. He is also named in tantric texts as the protector of the rites associated with Manjushri. The Kriya Tantra, associated with the invocation of Acala, was popularized by both Atisha (982–1054), the founder of the Kadampa school, and Lobpon Sonam Tsemo (1142–1182) of the Sakya school.
