This first state state has a different title than the second, which is entitled Les Villes Derrière Le Marécage (The Cities Behind The Swamp) (Van Gelder 124A). The print was intended for Fables et Contes by Hippolyte de Thierry-Faletans. Note on mat in graphite: "Le Papillion et la Mare / first version of ill. for Fables et Contes by Hippolyte de Theirry-Faletans / lithograph; singed and dated 1868 / Proof pinted by Lemercier: 1878."
