Proof for a book illustration with penciled notes by the artist. The work shows Annie Wray tying Martin Blunt's new cravat, and appeared as a frontispiece in "Mr. Wray's Cash-Box or the Mask and the Mystery, a Christmas Sketch" (dated 1852, but published December 17, 1851). This sentimental novel by Wilkie Collins.was reissued in 1852 and retitled "The New Neckcloth: A Modern Story." This first title was calculated to appeal to buyers during the Christmas season of 1851, the latter to readers after New Year's day 1852.
