Autumn: The Woodland Pond
This picture's rigorous symmetry and perspective are common features of landscapes that Diaz produced in his studio. Yet he was deeply committed to incorporating the details and effects of nature that he observed out of doors into his paintings, and works such as this one bear much in common with those of his fellow Barbizon painters, especially Théodore Rousseau. Diaz's late landscapes are distinctive for their rich pigments and translucent glazes.
