Charles Beauclerk (1670–1726), Duke of St. Albans

Sir Godfrey Kneller German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 509

The broad brushwork is a hallmark of Kneller’s style. The sitter (1620-1726, presuming he is correctly identified as the Duke of St. Albans), was the illegitimate son of Charles II by the actress Nell Gwynn.
