The Good Samaritan

Not on view
This small copy after a canvas by Francesco Bassano of about 1575 (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) was made as the model for an engraved plate in Teniers's Theatrum Pictorum (Antwerp, 1658), his catalogue of 229 Italian paintings in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1646 to 1656. By 1740 the Dukes of Marlborough owned 120 of Teniers's panels for the project, including this one.
