Box with Sleeping Eros

Roman or Byzantine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 301

Eros, the god of love, sleeps on a lion's skin with his bow in hand. The sides of this box are decorated with playful putti holding garlands and bulls' heads, an ancient sign of fertility.
