Base for a Statuette

North French or South Netherlandish

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 14

When commissioning the exterior of his new home, Henry Hamlyn adapted themes of popular entertainment more often seen on small-scale decorative arts. Here, the fool makes a mockery of love, whether its sanctioned or illicit. On one side, he officiates at a wedding. On the other, he presides over a feuding, and likely unfaithful, couple.
