The Studio (Vase before a Window)

Georges Braque French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 823

Braque’s paintings of the late 1930s reflect his sustained interest in exploring spatial representation, color harmony, and the play of contrasting textures—artistic concerns that can be traced back to Cubism. This work anticipates a major series of nine large paintings that Braque painted after the Second World War, all of which explore the space of the artist’s studio at Varengeville, on the Normandy coast.
