Street Palm and Night Palm (MMA 1995.467.1) are part of a group of four prints based on one of Hodgkin's favorite motifs, the palm tree. Hodgkin had fond memories of the colorful, large-scale travel posters that were prevalent in the Paris Métro in the 1950s and '60s—symbols of a certain postwar glamour and directness he hoped to evoke with these bright and spontaneous compositions. They were printed by Jack Shirreff at 107 Workshop in Wiltshire—the master printer who introduced Hodgkin to the process of using Carborundum (a mixture of carbon and silicon that lends the prints a painterly texture).
