Head of a girl

Designer Carl Paul Jennewein American

Not on view

In 1916 Jennewein was awarded the Prix de Rome, allowing him to spend several years studying sculpture in Italy at the American Academy. Best known for his monumental architectural sculptures, he rarely strayed from the classical ideal in his work. Here, Jennewein updated the idealized portrait bust, a staple of classical antiquity, with a fashionable marcelled hairstyle.
