Vase with abstract scroll decoration

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 205

Cizhou wares were domestic wares produced and used throughout north China. They were made as well at a few kilns in Inner Mongolia, and the combination of the sketchy incising with the use of a darker glaze in the central register suggests that this towering vase was made in the northeast.
