Plantain Lily
The strong interplay of color and ink, decorative appeal and calligraphy updates the tradition of flower painting that had evolved in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Chen's freer brushwork and bright color mark a direction that Chinese painting would take in the succeeding decades, and his influential position as a teacher and mentor served to carve out that path.
