Wedding ensemble with cranes, pines, and rising-cloud patterns

early 20th century
Not on view
This wedding ensemble, worn by the donor’s mother, is composed of two robes. The outer is black, adorned with cranes and young pines (both associated with longevity), stylized chrysanthemums, and the rising-cloud pattern—an emblem of good fortune. The upper section is unadorned except for the formal depictions of the bride’s family crest. The inner robe is white and is embellished with cranes, bamboo grass, and stylized flowers surrounded by a complementary rising-cloud motif.
