Shōko (鉦鼓)

Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

This gong is used in gagaku, the imperial court music of Japan. It is beaten on its inner surface with two round-headed wood sticks. The heads of the sticks rest on the gong after striking, then slide silently downward.
