Suling (ring flute)

Indonesian (Sundanese)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

The suling is an end-blown flute used in gamelan orchestras throughout Indonesia.
Large gamelans, including flutes, drums, stringed instruments, and large hanging gongs and ranks of potlike gongs, may number over fifty instruments and are used for palace and other important events. Smaller versions may accompany dance or wayang kulit (shadow puppet) presentations.
