Mummy Cloth Fragment

Third Intermediate–Late Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

Found inside a tall jar similar to 28.3.70, this scrap of cloth has an inscription in black ink still visible on the corner. This is difficult to read, but includes a date. The jar in which it was found was part of a group of pots containing material left over from a mummification that had been buried just below the surface in one of the western cemeteries at Thebes. A mud stopper still closed this jar, which also held 19 bundles of natron, more rags, and bits of halfa grass.
